A portrait doesn't have to be a stiff, composed shot--it can be pretty much anything you want, as long as it captures the essence of that person, or the atmosphere of that particular time. It can be formal, relaxed, refined or casual. I personally like to do most of my portrait work in the field...there's so much immediacy to those kind of pictures which I like a lot. Of course, studio work can be as equally rewarding, too...after all, a constructed image is just as legitimate as a raw one, when it's done right.
